Count the weeks left before setting a single task
A backward plan gets built in reverse. Start from the exam date, count the weeks actually available, and only then split the material across them, never the other way around. Setting an ideal revision program first, then discovering it doesn't fit the time left, is the surest way to give up after ten days.
Five weeks before an exam doesn't call for the same plan as two weeks. Counting first changes what you're willing to aim for: genuinely mastering three subjects instead of skimming all five on the syllabus.
List subjects and chapters, without worrying about order yet
Once the number of weeks is set, the next step is listing what needs revising: each subject, then the chapters or themes within it. The goal is having the whole syllabus laid out in front of you, not keeping it in your head, where it always ends up either overflowing or shrinking down to whatever's causing the most anxiety at the moment.

Space out revisions instead of cramming the night before
Information learned only once fades fast. The forgetting curve, described by psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus as early as 1885, illustrates that rapid memory loss when nothing reactivates it. Going over material several times, spaced out over time rather than crammed into one session right before the exam, anchors it more durably: that's confirmed by an article from the University of Neuchâtel on effective revision methods, which recommends spaced repetition over simple re-reading.
In practice, that looks like a rhythm along these lines: revisit a chapter the day after learning it, then a few days later, then a week after that, tightening the interval on whatever concepts are resisting. No need to recalculate dates by hand for a rhythm that comes back every week: setting a recurrence on the task handles that, backed by a reminder so the session doesn't get lost in the rush.
Revise actively, not just by re-reading your notes
Re-reading a course gives a misleading sense of mastery. Your eyes recognize the words, which isn't the same as being able to produce them without the material in front of you. A study published in the journal Science by Karpicke and Roediger compared the two approaches: after a week, students who had actively tested themselves on the content retained 80%, against 36% for those who had simply re-read it. A landmark meta-analysis by Dunlosky and colleagues confirms that self-testing ranks among the most effective learning strategies, well ahead of highlighting or re-reading.
A useful revision session looks more like an exercise than a reading assignment: close the material and put what you just read into your own words, redo a practice exercise without looking at the answer, question yourself on a definition before checking it. It's more uncomfortable than re-reading, and that's exactly what makes the difference on exam day.
Spread sessions across the week, without lying to yourself about your real time
Once the program is broken down subtask by subtask, it still needs to fit into the time you actually have.
